The ancient phrase tian ren he yi 天人合一 (often translated as “the unity of Heaven and humans”) expresses a profound truth at the heart of Classical Chinese Medicine and cosmology. It describes not only a philosophical ideal, but a living reality: that human beings are born of, shaped by, and intimately connected to the movements of Heaven (天 tian) and Earth (地 di).

In this talk, Deborah Woolf explores the many ways in which humans reflect and embody the greater cosmos — how our physiology, channel system, and acupuncture points mirror the structure and movements of the universe. Drawing on classical texts and cosmological theory, we will examine how the flow of qi, the formation of the body, and even the placement of points all express this holographic relationship.

Rather than seeing the body in isolation, Classical Chinese Medicine understands it as a microcosm — a resonant field that responds to the rhythms of time, space, and the cycles of nature. By understanding this relationship, we not only deepen our clinical insight, but also reconnect with the broader Dao of life.

In this session, you will:

  • Explore the classical meaning of tian ren he yi and its medical implications
  • Learn how the human body and channels reflect the structure of the cosmos
  • Understand how Heaven and Earth interact in the formation and functioning of the human being
  • See how acupuncture points express this unity in tangible, clinical ways

This is an inspiring and perspective-shifting session that brings Chinese Medicine back to its cosmological roots — offering both theoretical insight and practical resonance for clinical practice.
