Moxibustion: A Practical Workshop

John Jaarsveld studied acupuncture and moxibustion for many years with several Japanese teachers, and Felip Caudet.
John has been a student of Kiiko Mastumoto sensei for 15 years, in the Netherlands and abroad. He applies the method in his own clinical practice on a daily basis: palpation and critical thinking, alongside the Neijing and the Nanjing, are the basis of his clinic. Before studying acupuncture, John held a black belt in Bujinkan Budo Taijitsu and studied and practised shiatsu and qi gong for about 10 years. After graduating from acupuncture school, and first meeting David Euler and then Kiiko Matsumoto sensei, he has so far spent over 1000 hours with Kiiko sensei .

Moxibustion: A Practical Workshop for Acupuncturists and Shiatsu Practitioners
Moxibustion, the therapeutic application of heat using burning moxa (typically made from the herb *Artemisia vulgaris* or mugwort), has been an integral part of traditional East Asian medicine for many centuries. Despite its well-documented benefits, it remains a somewhat underutilized and under-taught technique in many acupuncture and shiatsu programs. This hands-on workshop aims to bridge that gap by providing participants with practical skills and knowledge to confidently incorporate moxibustion into their clinical practice.

Why Moxibustion Matters
Moxibustion is highly regarded in traditional medicine for its ability to strengthen the body's vital energy (Qi), dispel cold and dampness, and promote overall balance and well-being. It can be a powerful stand-alone therapy or a complementary technique that enhances the effectiveness of acupuncture or shiatsu treatments. When applied correctly, moxibustion can address a wide range of conditions, from chronic pain and fatigue to digestive and gynecological issues.

This workshop will provide comprehensive, hands-on training in various forms of moxibustion, with a particular emphasis on practical application. Participants will learn through direct experience, working with each other to develop the skills needed to perform moxibustion safely and effectively.

  • Okyu (Japanese Rice-Grain Direct Moxibustion)

Okyu, a refined and precise form of direct moxibustion using small rice-grain-sized cones of moxa, is a cornerstone of Japanese therapeutic practice. While the technique is relatively straightforward, mastering it requires patience, attention to detail, and dedicated practice.

The workshop will guide participants through the step-by-step process of preparing and applying okyu, focusing on:
   - Proper formation and placement of rice-grain moxa cones
   - Identifying suitable acupuncture points for rice-grain moxibustion

  • Thunderstick moxibustion (moxa cigar on newspaper technique)

The Thunderstick technique is a great way to put a lot of warmth in an acupuncture region.

  • Tiger warmer moxibustion

The Tiger warmer is a great tool that can be used by practitioners or as homework by the patient
